John Fleetwood presents a course exploring South African photography and its contribution to global dialogues on culture, identity and social justice in a four-week online course, through The Photographers’ Gallery.

This follows the Ernest Cole House of Bondage exhibition, shown at The Photographers’ Gallery in London, which revisits South African photographer Ernest Cole’s ground-breaking project House of Bondage, one of the most significant photobooks of the twentieth century.

Photographers of each age, traversing temporalities and generations, transmute meaning through their photographs, both, from the past, and toward the future.

South African photography is deeply marked by these intimate exchanges with the past, present and the future. Ernest Cole’s House of Bondage exemplifies these intergenerational conversations.

Sabelo Mlangeni was the guest for the online course at The Photographer’s Gallery ‘Evolving Perspectives on Photography from South Africa’, led by John Fleetwood on 25 Sep.

Mlangeni spoke about the intimate dynamics of community and identity in his series “Country Girls” and “Men only”. The session dealt with the photographer as a witness highlighting the intersections of personal and public experiences of photography.

Eric Gyamfi, Ghana, was the guest for the online course at The Photographer’s Gallery ‘Evolving Perspectives on Photography from South Africa’, led by John Fleetwood on 09 Oct.

Gyamfi spoke about his project and photobook dummy “A Certain Bed”, and the limitations and possibilities of documentary photorgaphy. The workshop also pointed to the interconnectedness of photography in Africa through its colonial histories.

The Photographers’ Gallery, based in London, offers in-person and online programmes – from exhibitions, talks, and workshops, to courses, tours, an archive, and more . They aim to inspire conversation and collaboration, and explore the beauty, complexity and future of photography.
